Way back after the Indian independence, Dalits and under privileged people from the Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh and Gulbarga district of Karnataka flocked to Bombay in search of daily lives and settled in the parts of island city mainly Dharavi , Mahim ,Kurla etc. localities.
In the year 1970 significantly from Mahim and Dharavi locality Dalits and deprived Madiga people established “Andhra Karnataka Dalita Varga Sangha” and registered on 15th November, 1971 under Bombay Public Trust Act,1950 with an objective to get the social equality status to promote education amongst the community, procure political gains and improve economical status of the community.
With the idealisms and influence as guiding principles of our great social reformers like Mahatma Jyothiba phule, Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, E.V.Ramaswamy Periyar, Annabhau Sathe and so on. AKDVS set an object to work towards upliftment of the Dalit community especially in Mumbai.
AKDVS started its social reformation at Asia’s biggest slum in Dharavi. It has done pioneering work in eradicating superstitious beliefs, Devadasi system, dowry system, and reframed the complete marriage system in our community.
With the ideology of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar AKDVS started school in the name of Bharatratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Vidyalaya in the year 1990 at Dharavi by introducing class K.G. to SSC with English Medium.& to avail and facilitate to the local Kannada students, AKDVS also introduced Kannada Medium in the year 2002. From the Academic year 2009-2010 AKDVS started Junior College with commerce stream. presently near about 2000 students are studying in the school especially they hails from our community.
AKDVS started its movement in Andhra Pradesh particularly in backward Telangana region of Makthal and established a branch office to agitate and fight towards the social inequalities in A.P. and also AKDVS bought 10 acres of land for the future proposed higher and Technical Education in Makthal.
AKDVS started its movement against the religious hierarchy and constructed New Hanuman Devalyam at Dharavi to worship and celebrate various religious festivals to the community.
To conduct various social gatherings to organise community awareness programmes and for community marriages etc. AKDVS constructed “Rashtramata Savitrimai Phule Hall” at Dharavi.
AKDVS has formed different wings namely AKDVS Seva Mandal, Mahila Mandal and Graduate Forum to organize & conduct the various social awareness programmes amongst the community people.
Thus, AKDVS has been relentlessly working for the cause of poor and underprivileged sections of the society.
